Elise Wilken of Mellow Ceramics

Elise Wilken of Mellow Ceramics

I was initially drawn to Elise Wilken of Mellow Ceramics when I walked by her sun-filled Allen Street studio during COVID-19 in the lower east side of NYC. There, I saw her working at her pottery wheel, surrounded by a collection of ceramics.

Her studio also serves as a storefront, and she welcomes the public to shop, take workshops, or host events. With her friendly and cheerful demeanor, you’ll feel tempted to stay and enjoy a cup of tea for hours.

We have a few items at her shop this holiday season! The Hera vase, wall vase, and Frankie stacking cups.

Where is home?

I tend to feel at home wherever I might be, right now home is New York CIty.

What inspired you to create this space for your studio?

It was really a matter of the stars aligning. The store / studio was never really planned, it was a matter of one thing leading to the next and before i knew it Mellow on Allen st was born.  It was the time of lockdowns and social distancing, my old studio was a shared space with many potters in brooklyn, that became hard to manage with all of the restrictions. So my friends at Sabah invited me into their 4th floor studio / shoe store on Bleecker st, where I set up my ceramic studio. I was there for a few years and as things slowly opened up, my studio also became a retail space. It felt nice to be able to create and also meet new people, collaborate all at once. It came time to move again and I have been living in the Lower East Side for many years so moving the studio to the neighbourhood seems like a natural move.

Can you walk us through your journey as an artist? When did you realize this was your path?

As I touched on before, it was a matter of one thing leading to the next. Since before I can remember, I have always been creating something. My mum is crafty and visually minded, my dad could make and fix almost anything. When I was young, I was always drawing, glueing, sewing and molding. I studied Communication Design in college, and moved into Photography soon after, from there I craved an avenue to create with my hands. Then with a few friends, I started learning ceramics. I still do a mixture of everything as I feel they all go hand-in-hand when creating a brand.

What materials or techniques do you find yourself drawn to most in your work?

I work with clay, and like to embrace the raw material and colours whenever possible. All pieces are made either hand-built or on the pottery wheel, I do a little slip casting too.

Is there a specific piece or series that you feel represents your artistic voice?

There are notably three collections that i feel work in unison to create Mellow; first it was the checkers, then came the swirls and now it's the suns. Maybe Mellow is better known for the Checkered pieces but I feel everything that is created here represents the brand, but maybe that's just because I'm amongst it all right now..

How do you balance your time between creating art and the business side of your practice?

I feel like it happens all at once.

What role does collaboration play in your creative process? Have you collaborated with other artists?

I really enjoy collaborating, it stretches my mind to create something I may never have thought to previously.. such as a series of sun buttons for Upstate : )

How do you stay motivated and inspired when the creative process gets challenging?

I try to break away, and do something out of my usual routine. That might be walking a different route, exploring a new area or visiting a museum or gallery. When possible, breaking away from the city, to nature is a big help for me.

Can you share a memorable experience or milestone in your artistic career?

Lucky there have been a few. This year I think that would be seeing how the store has evolved and invited people in... also having a billboard on E.Broadway was pretty mind blowing.

What advice would you give to emerging artists trying to find their style or voice?

Be true to whatever feels true and natural to you.

Who are some artists or creators that influence your work? How do they inspire you?

I would have to say that it would be the people around me that i'm grateful to call my friends and my family.

What is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist for you?

The community. Being able to create and share with people.

How has your work evolved over the years, and where do you see it going in the future?

We will have to wait and see.

Can you describe your ideal creative environment? What elements are essential for you?

I'm pretty happy here in the Mellow studio, but a studio on the mediterranean would be lovely too.

What is your favorite item from Upstate and why?

i love everything, the magical patterns that are created from the dye are so beautiful. I have been wearing the Leisure pants in Butter a lot <3  Photography by Chris Bernabeo
